Indian-American Muslims condemn attempts to disfigure 400-year-old Char Minar in Hyderabad

IMO News Service

Washington DC: The Association of Indian Musims of America (AIM), an NGO of Indian Musims who live in North America, have condemned recent attempts by some miscreants who are trying to ilegally builld a full fledged Hindu temple abutting the wall of the world renowned, four hundred year old Char Minar monument in Hyderabad city, thereby disfiguring it. The grand Char Minar monument comprising of four lofty minarets was built in 1592 by Sultan Qutub Quli Khan, the fourth king of the Qutubshahi dynasty that ruled vast areas of present day Andhra Pradesh and Karnatak for over 300 years.

The miscreants have tried to build the temple that they call Bhagyalakshmi temple abutting the wall of Char Minar monument for nearly sixtly years. Yet in al these years it has been a small stone idol on the sidewalk of Char Minar, that they have attenpted to expand. In recent years they have tried to build walls and roof on the stone to give it the shape of a regular temple to goddess Lakshmi. The Andhra Pradesh High Court and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) recently issued an order to the state government to not allow any construction on the said temple.

Yet the miscreants with help from police and state authorities have carried out some construction, like building of the structure of a canopy and walls, in brazen violation of the High Court order. What is most regrettable is that the Andhra Pradesh government led by the Congress party has abetted with the miscreants in carrying out the illegal construction. This incident has created much Hindu-Musim tension in the city of Hyderabad along religious lines, and there is a possibility of sectarian vioence and rioting.

The Muslim community of Hyderabad is rightfully agitated. Majlis Ittihad Muslimeen (MIM), the major political party in Hyderabad/ Andha Pradesh has withdrawn support from the state Congress government and is agitating against the said illegal actions. The Association of Indiian Musims of America fully supports the Musim community of Hyderabad and MIM and condemns the Andhra Pradesh government for violating the High Court order and for illegally assisting the unauthorized construction activities at the said temple. We appeal to all people that they shoud make the state government and the people who are trying to build the said temple, to stop these harmful activities and the disfiguring of the 400 year old Char Minar monument and disturbing peace in the city of Hyderabad.
