Aligarh: Dr. Shahab Fazal, Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University has published a book, “Land Use Dynamics in a Developing Economy: Regional Perspectives from India”. The book has been published by prestigious, Springer International.

Dr. Fazal said that today, India still remains a rural agricultural country although the share of urban population has also increased. But these figures do not tell the whole story. There are evidences that urban growth is dispersed and urban sprawl promotes the spread of urban land use into the rural-urban fringe.

He said that the book investigates the land transformation and the driving forces which were influencing the land transformation. The present study was done on Peri-urban interface (PUI) of Aligarh city, a relatively small city, but as other north Indian cities, it is also expanding rapidly.

Moreover, it too is surrounded by a populous rural area with productive and rich agricultural hinterland. Such conditions give rise to many conflicts and mutually beneficial complementarities in the rural and urban spheres. He said that the demand for land is high and every piece of land has become a tradable commodity. Besides, pursuit of short-term profits has become a predominant ethics.

Dr. Shahab Fazal’s research interests are in Land use and Land transformation issues in urban fringe and GIS. He has published twelve books and nearly fifty research articles in various national and international journals. He is recipient of prestigious fellowships such as, CSIR Fellowship, Canadian Government - Shastri Faculty Research Fellowship, Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship, DST-DAAD Fellowship, Netherlands Government- NWO-ICSSR, Department of Science and Technology - Young Scientist Project etc. He has successfully completed four Major Research Projects sponsored by DST, ICSSR, DST-DAAD and SICI (Canada).
