Delhi Waqf Board plans to go ahead with marriage registration

New Delhi: Despite opposition from some Muslim groups, Delhi Waqf Board is planning to go ahead with its proposal to ensure registration of marriages in the community.

"It is true that few Muslim groups have opposed this proposal but we will not step back. It will be in the benefit of Muslims and hence, efforts will be made to evolve an agreement," Mufti Aijaz Arshad Qasmi, Member of Delhi Waqf Board, told a news agency.

He said, "Due to opposition, there was no progress in this connection but now a draft will be prepared soon. Then efforts will be made to seek everybody's approval. We will also take Delhi government's help in this regard."

Few months back, Delhi Waqf Board had decided to make arrangements for registration of marriages in Muslim community for which Qazis will be deputed in all 9 districts.

Under these arrangements, the registration of marriages will take place under the observation of Qazis and the certificate will also be provided by Waqf Board. The matter of deputing a Chief Qazi for supervising these Qazis has also been discussed.

This proposal of Delhi Waqf Board has been strongly opposed by Muslim groups including Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

According to these groups, in presence of 'nikahanama' (the testimony of marriage in Islam) no registration or any legal document is required. Questions have been raised on the rights of Waqf Board as well in this context.

"We will persuade the government to get a bill passed for getting the rights of issuing marriage certificates and getting the legal validity of these certificates," Qasmi said.
The meeting of the Board will take place soon where this issue will be discussed and an attempt will be made to give a final shape to the proposal.

Qasmi said they are hopeful that people will support this issue.
