Afghani Olympic Athletes hosted for Iftar by Muslim leaders in London

London: The Iftar 2012 initiative invited Afghanistan’s top Athletes including female 100m Olympic Sprinter Tahmina Kohistani and fellow Afghani Olympians and coaches at the Muslim Community and Education Centre Palmers Green Mosque, on the evening of the 5th August to enjoy the Iftar2012 Ramadan feast.

The Afghanistan Olympic athletes and management were invited to the mosque along with members of London Afghani and Pakistani community in Enfield, London. The Iftar meal was attended by many people who were delighted and excited to meet with the stars.
In the Masjid Islamic prayers were offered and the community prayed for the success of the team and prayed for peace and prosperity for Afghanistan.

Shaukat Warraich, Director of Iftar 2012 said: “It was a wonderful evening, where the community of Afghani heritage and the local people of North London came together to welcome & celebrate the achievements of the Afghani team and nation. The people of Afghanistan have been through many challenges, but the Olympic message and dreams have inspired many to look to the future in hope”

Shaukat Warraich also said “it is our Islamic duty to host our guests in the best way possible and show our respect for the representatives of this great nation. The Iftar 2012 project was a way to show our Islamic and British hospitality during this once in a life time opportunity when London and the Olympics coincide with the blessed month of Ramadan”. 

The Chief of mission for Afghanistan Mujeebullah Rahmani of the Afghanistan Olympic Authority praised the warm welcome and generous hospitality during the visit and presented a gift to the MCEC Masjid he commented “the Muslim community in London had built many Masjids and this was a sign of unity and success, he also mentioned the hard work done by the team to get to London 2012 and asked all for their prayers” 

Iftar 2012 project has hosted Muslim and Non Muslim for Iftars during this year’s Olympics. Iftar 2012 has been working with the biggest Masjid in the UK to show the Islamic welcome and hospitality of the Muslim Community in the UK towards the Olympians, Olympic visitors and local neighbours of Masjids.
