Bhopal: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), while vehemently condemning the savage hike of Rs.7.50 in the price of petrol, which is the steepest ever in last 10 years, has demanded its immediate roll back.

E. Aboobacker, the national president of SDPI, in a statement termed the petrol price increase unreasonable and unjustified on every count as the common man is already reeling under inflation and skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. The unprecedented hike depicts how insensitive the Congress-led UPA government has become to the sufferings of the common people. The Union government's move was completely unethical and undemocratic, he added.

Mr. Aboobacker ridiculed Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Jaipal Reddy’s stance in the defence of the hike wherein the minister reportedly cited the free fall in rupee prices against the dollar as the reason. He wondered why the government was unable to check the decline of the Rupee as compared to other currencies of the world while smaller countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh and China were not witnessing such a decline of the value of their currencies.

He held the UPA government's 'wrong' economic policies were responsible for the price rise, steep rupee depreciation and economic slowdown. He alleged the government's inept handling of the economic situation was responsible for this. The gross mismanagement of food and general economy by the UPA regime has led to the decline of the Rupee. The hike in the petrol price could have been avoided by reducing the profit of the government as well as private run oil companies, reducing the tax on petrol and checking the falling rupee value, he further added.

Mr. Aboobacker warned that SDPI will not hesitate to join other political parties to launch an agitation against the savage petrol price hike if it is not rolled back forthwith.
