Sanjay Joshi -- Still a force to reckon with in Gujarat?

By Abdul Hafiz Lakhani
Ahmedabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sanjay Joshi, considered to be close to party president Nitin Gadkari, has resigned ahead of the party’s National Executivemeeting beginning in Mumbai today.  A  victory  for  Gujarat  CM narendra  Modi.. But  Joshi  may have taken tactical retreat according to political pundits.

This move is being viewed as an attempt on the part of the BJP to buy peace with Modi, who did not attend the last meeting of the National Executive held in Delhi in December.Modi was reportedly upset over Joshi’s induction in the BJP, and had not even campaigned for the party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.Joshi, an old RSS hand, was also given the important charge of handling the poll campaign in Uttar Pradesh.

Sleaze CD may have led to his expulsion from the party in 2005, the former BJP general secretary and Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh 'Pracharak' Sanjay Joshi, however, did not lose his place with the BJP and RSS party workers in Gujarat who still remember Joshi with the same respect. Irrespective of the outcome of the investigation of the CD, nobody doubts his character. The BJP and RSS workers term Joshi as the best general secretary Gujarat BJP ever had in recent times and many still kept in touch with him.

A man of relations

Joshi was believed to be an organisational worker who believed in creating good relations with workers at the grassroots-level. He kept in touch with all the workers. "You ask any of the old BJP worker and he will proudly share his experience of having lunch or dinner with Joshi at his home," said a senior BJP workers. The workers also feel that Joshi always had a solution to any of their problems. "At present, no one pays any heed to workers' complaints, which was not the case when Joshi was here," said another worker. "He still commands respect from the workers," said an RSS member.

Rivalry begins

Joshi and Modi shared good relation in the earlier days. However, rivalry started with both of them getting political prominence. When Joshi was appointed as the general secretary he took the then city president and other office bearers in his fold and captured the state. On the other hand, Modi was working wonders outside Gujarat - this is when they turned rivals.
It was also believed that Joshi used the intelligence bureau to get information during Narendra Modi's visit to Gujarat. Party insiders believe that the feud between the two surfaced during the 'Khajuraho' episode that shook the Gujarat BJP. Moreover, Modi and Joshi had differences of opinion in selection of a candidate for by-election of Sarkhej constituency in 1997. The seat had fallen vacant after death of HL Patel.Modi succeeded in getting Amit Shah selected as the BJP candidate.

Modi's revenge

CM was allegedly behind the CD episode that led to Joshi's expulsion from the BJP. After assuming powers in Gujarat, Modi also side-lined many loyalists including ex-ministers of Keshubhai Patel's cabinet. Recently, several strong candidates were denied ticket in the AMC elections because of their Joshi connection. "Many candidates were called and told clearly that they were denied ticket as they were still in contact with Joshi and used to meet him in Delhi," said sources in the BJP.
