GUJARAT UPDATE: 'Development in Vikas Purush Narendra Modi's constituency at a sluggish pace'

By  Abdul Hafiz Lakhani

The image of Narendra Modi as an efficient CEO notwithstanding, development works in the Chief Minister’s own constituency of Maninagar have moved only at a sluggish pace. In 2011-12,work on just one of the 29 projects suggested by Modi began in Maninagar.

Modi had suggested development works worth Rs 49.3 lakh to be implemented as part of MLA Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) grant for 2011-12 (ended on March 31). The district planning authority, however, approved only 12 works worth Rs 19.7 lakh of which implementation has begun in just one project.

In the previous year (2010-11), the chief minister had suggested 45 projects worth Rs 52.1 lakh, of which 41 got administrative approval and 33 were completed. Eight of them are yet to begin.

Same goes for Modi’s Cabinet. As per the status report of the District Planning Office, former minister of state (home) Amit Shah had suggested 17 development works worth Rs 49.5 lakh for his Sarkhej constituency in 2011-12. Much to the dismay of the minister, who has been ordered to stay away from Gujarat by the Supreme court due to his alleged role in the Sohrabuddin encounter killing, not even one got the administrative approval during the year.
Similarly, Pradipsinh Jadeja, who is the Minister of State for Law and Legislative Affairs, suggested 118 works worth Rs 1.75 crore for his constituency of Asarva. He got approval for 20, but work did not begin in even one of them.

Congress MLAs fare better

Surprisingly, the figures from the status report show Congress MLAs have fared better in utilising funds allocated to them.

Congress MLA from Shahpur, Gayasudin Shiekh, suggested 72 projects worth Rs 44 lakh last year. He got approval for 23. Work on 12 has been completed while implementation of 23 projects have begun.

Similarly, Congress MLA from Kalupur, Farukh Sheikh, suggested 75 projects during the same year and got approval for 35 projects, of which work on 21 has begun. Seven are complete and 14 others are under implementation.

Congress MLA from Jamaplur, Sabir Kabliwala, has beaten them all. He suggested 80 projects during the same year, of which 48 projects worth Rs 50 lakh were approved. Work on 39 have already begun, while 35 projects are complete. Work on four others is on.
