Special jails for Muslim terror suspects?

By Abdul Hafiz Lakhani

Ahmedabad: Gujarat  government has cleared a proposal to build a “special jail” to house terror suspects who are currently lodged in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Central Jail, which is packed with 4,000 prisoners, almost double its capacity.  Most of terror suspects are muslims who were arrested from the various part of the country.

The great tragedy of whole Muslim community is that on one side they were facing bomb terror and lost their lives and the lives of their kith and kin, and on other side police terror is hitting the Muslim community and are facing physical and mental torture in the name of so called investigation. Police is dumping Muslim youths in the jail and spoiling their future.

The state prisons department has already received Rs 1 crore for the proposed high-security prison that can house 200 inmates in cells under CCTV surveillance. The construction for the prison, which will not have any barracks, will likely start in a month.

The prisons department has sought for 25 acres of land from the Gandhinagar collectorate for the jail that will also have a library and a health centre. The collectorate, according to sources, could finalise a site near the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU) that has some surplus land.Gandhinagar Collector P Swaroop said, “The prisons department has suggested that the land near GFSU may be allotted for this prison.

We are considering the proposal. The availability of land of this size is slightly difficult but we will allot a plot as close as possible to the main city of Gandhinagar.”Additional DGP (Prisons) P C Thakur said, “The special prison will house only those who are suspects or convicts in terror-related cases or anti-nationals arrested under POTA.

The population of such suspects has increased and they need to be kept separately, under strict watch.”At present, 65 suspects for the 2008 serial blasts in Ahmedabad and Surat are lodged in the Sabarmati Central Jail’s “Anda cell”, an egg-shaped enclosure meant for high-security prisoners. Among them is Safdar Nagori, the alleged SIMI boss.
