All India United Democratic Front seeks Aligarh Muslim University campus in Dhubri

Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has sought opening of a campus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Dhubri - a minority dominated district bordering Bangladesh.
AIUDF leaders said this would help many minority students to avail higher education in the district. "It is a dream of Muslim students in the state to study in Aligarh Muslim University. But many cannot avail of the opportunity because of financial constraints and distance. So, having an AMU campus in Dhubri will be of great benefit to minority students in the state," an AIUDF leader said.

Recently, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who is an MP from Dhubri, raised the issue in the budget session of Parliament.

Ajmal also sought job quota for Muslims in semi-government agencies, private sectors and various higher education institutions on the basis of population pattern. The AIUDF chief said medical, engineering, agriculture and fisheries colleges should also be established in Muslim-majority districts as the community was still lagging behind in higher education.

Although the IIT-JEE admission committee has decided to introduce 4.5 per cent reservation in IITs for students of the minority community from this year, AIUDF has recently expressed concern that many Muslim students would be deprived admissions because of the delay in issuing minority certificates by the state government.
