Banihal: Markaz-i-Noor, Sheikh-ul-Alam Chair, University of Kashmir organized an impressive programme at Government Degree College Banihal the other day. The programme wherein an extension lectures on the topic “Alamdar and his message with special reference to his influence of the society of Jammuites” was delivered by eminent Urdu and Kashmiri writer Manshoor Banhali.

The programme attended by galaxy of scholars writers and devotees of Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA), was presided over by Mr. Ghulam Nabi Gowhar while as Prof. Margoob Banhali and Rukhsana Jabeen, Director Radio Kashmir Srinagar were also in the presidium.

Chairman of Markaz-i-Noor, Sheikh-ul-Alam Chair, Prof. Basher Bashir while welcoming the guests said that the Alamdar is the standard bearer not only for the Kashmiris living in the valley but for the whole human race. He thanked the people of Banihal and other parts of the state who heartedly invited functionaries of the chair to conduct more and more programmes on great saint poet of Kashmir Sheikh Noor-u-Din Noorani (RA). He said that since Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA) has a lineage with the Jammu division so it is obligatory for us to conduct more and more progammes in the division also. He further said that we find a good number of words in the poetry of Shiekh-ul-Alam (RA) which have still currency in areas of Jammu division but are not used in preset day modern spoken Kashmir in the valley of Kashmir. As such the study of these areas and the dialects of language spoken therein is an important area of Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA) studies.

The lecture delivered by Manshoor Banhali generated a warm debate and discussion among the participants and it was unanimously said that the best tribute to Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA) is to preserve Kashmiri language ethos at large. Prof. Margoob Banhali in his thought provoking address said that Sheikh-ul-Alam chair is making history by organizing such programmes in Jammu division. He hailed efforts of Prof. Basher Bashir and his colleagues.

While delivering presidential address, Ghulam Nabi Gowhar pointed the peculiarities of language spoken in Kishtwar and Banihal and laid stress on launching of research projects through which the similarities of this dialect with poetry of Shiekh-ul-Alam (RA) could be highlighted. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Aziz Hajini of Sheikh-ul-Alam chair. He conducted the proceedings of the event as well. The exhibition of the publication of the chair was an attractive part of the event.
