Bohra Reformists seek PM intervention not to issue postal stamp in honor of Dawoodi Bohra High Priest

IMO News Service

Bohra reformists have recently written to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention not to issue postal stamp in honor of the Dawoodi Bohra High Priest His Holiness Dr. Syedna Muhammad Burhanuddin on the occasion of his 100th birthday as planned by the postal department of Government of India.

A copy of letter to the Prime Minister has also been sent to IndianMuslimObserver.com. The Bohra reformists wrote: "Respected Sir, We, the undersigned, wish to draw your kind attention to a news which appeared in Indian Express (copy of which is enclosed herewith) some time ago that the postal department of Govt. of India is thinking of issuing a postal stamp to honour the Dawoodi Bohra High Priest H H Dr. Syedna Muhammad Burhanuddin on the occasion of his 100th Birth Day. We wish to draw your kind attention to the fact that the Dawoodi Bohra high priest is highly controversial person. He has been violating human and democratic rights of hundreds of Dawoodi Bohras who do not obey his firmans blindly and who are demanding democratic and secular reforms and accountability for billions of rupees collected by him and his establishment every year.

"These reformists are systematically persecuted and ex-communicated or socially boycotted and not allowed to meet their own family members, their dead bodies are not allowed to be buried in Dawoodi Bohra graveyard. A systematic inquiry held by a commission headed by honorable Justice Narendra Nathwani and honorable Justice Tewatia, both high court judges, have conclusively shown systematic violation of human rights of reformist Dawoodi Bohras and hence it would be insult to those who are struggling for democratic reforms to honour such a controversial high priest who has rendered no services to the country.

"Also, his staff is known to be involved in smuggling currency and diamonds etc.from other countries like Sri Lanka, Kenya etc. and for that reason ordered out of those countries. This was widely reported in the press during seventies and eighties.

"May we request you, Honourable Mr. Prime Minister, to kindly intervene and stop such a stamp, if any, being issued by the post and telegraph department. We will be highly obliged to Your Honour."

The signatories to this letter include Farooq Abdul Gaffar Bawani (Rajkot); M. Salim A. Gani Suraiya, Advocate, Gujarat High Court; Mustafa Iqbalbhai Galeriya; M Asharaf Haji A Razak Dosani; Maksud Harunbhai Punjani; and Abdul Hafiz Lakhani.
