Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath (TNTJ) organised protest in all district headquarters across Tamil Nadu on February 14 demanding 10 per cent reservation for Muslims in education and employment opportunities in the Union Government and 7 percent reservation in the State.

Speaking to reporters, State President of TNTJ Moulavi.P. Zainul Abedeen said the Committees headed by Justice Rajindar Sachar and Justice Ranganath Misra, which conducted in-depth probe on the living conditions and social status of the Muslims across the country, had recommended to the Union Government that 10 percent reservation in education and employment opportunities should be given to uplift the community. Subsequently, the recommendations were tabled in the Parliament for its approval.

Justice Ranganath Misra Committee even went a step ahead to say that the Union Government should give 15 percent reservation to the Minorities and 10 percent reservation for Muslims within this reservation to change the living condition of Muslims across the country.

"The Congress Party, which came to power two times successively, had promised in its manifesto that the party would give a 10 percent reservation to the Muslims if was voted to power. However, the ruling Congress, which was yet to take any step in this connection, had promised in its manifesto for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls that it would give 4.50 percent reservation for minorities, which is nothing but cheating the Muslims,” said TNTJ State President.

"During the assembly election campaign, ruling Anna Dravida Munnetra Kalagam(ADMK) president Ms.Jayalalitha has promised the Muslims that she will increase the percentage of reservation from 3.5 percent if was voted to power. We also demand 7 percent reservation for Muslims in jobs and education in the state," said Mr. Abedeen.

"Pressing these demands, the TNTJ, has already conducted a massive conference at Island Grounds in Chennai on July 4, 2009, TNTJ is organising protest in all district headquarters across Tamil Nadu today, and thousands of Muslims across the state including women have witnessed this protest. Only reservation will be the permanent solution for improving the socio-economic conditions of the Muslims. And, if ruling Congress Party goes on betraying the Muslims then it should face the consequences in the coming Lok Sabha elections,” said P.Zainul Abedeen.

Thousands of Muslims held protest rallies in districts like Thiruvallur, South Chennai, North Chennai, Nellai, Thiruvarur, Thanjore, Tuticorin, Madurai and Trichy.

The police officials had imposed the ban in Coimbatore citing that February 14 bomb blast was held in the city in 1998. Security in the city was tightened and more than 1,500 policemen were deployed in the city. Defying the ban, more than 2,500 Muslims participated in the protest. The police started arresting people but weren't able to book all the protestors. Later, those arrested were accomodated in the marriage hall and were released by 9 pm.

The TNTJ officials have urged the central and state government to hear their voices and act immediately on the issue of reservation to Muslims. They have also warned that if the governments fail then they will organise such protests at a bigger level.
