Assam Muslim Welfare Union slams NC

Dimapur: Assam Muslim Welfare Union (AMWU) has expressed sympathy with the victim of gang rape, and also prayed that God (Allah) help the victim overcome the trauma and urged the police to award befitting punishment to those involved.

However, AMWU president Arif Laskar and general secretary Mudalir Ali regretted that some NGOs such as Naga Council in Dimapur were taking advantage of the incident by “playing dirty politics of earning money” in creating fear psychosis among minorities especially Muslims in Dimapur.

Slamming the Naga Council on the issue of identity cards to all Muslims, AMWU said it was against the constitution and the government. Stating the NGOs were meant for public welfare and not to create fear psychosis or divide society, AMWU said Dimapur has a sizeable Muslim population from Assam and other states as much as Nagas also migrated to other states for education or livelihood.

It warned that Naga Council should not victimize Muslims in Dimapur lest Nagas in other states also face similar fate. AMWU asked Naga Council to stop its “evil design” of dividing society on religious lines, or it would take up the matter with the prime minister and Minority Commission. It asked Nagaland government to solve the issue and prevent an NGO from taking the law into their own hands.
