Madhya Pradesh CM writes to PM to form panel to assess pollution around abandoned Union Carbide factory

Bhopal: In a letter to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged the former to constitute a special committee for assessing the quantum of soil and water pollution around abandoned Union Carbide factory premises.

In his letter, Chief Minister Mr. Chouhan said that Group of Ministers headed by the Union Home Minister for disposal of issued pertaining to Bhopal gas tragedy has been reconstituted.

At the meetings of the Group of Ministers, Chairman of the Oversight Committee, Union Minister for Environment and Forests and Joint President, Madhya Pradesh Government, Gas Relief Minister have pleaded that an assessment should be made about the quantum of soil and water pollution on the premises of Union Carbide and adjoining areas. Besides, contemplation should be made for getting the remediation of soil and groundwater sources done by a national-level technical agency.

In the letter, Chief Minister Mr. Chouhan has appealed to the Prime Minister to constitute a special committee under the supervision of a competent agency of the Union Government. Experts in environment sector of Madhya Pradesh should also be included in the committee. The State Government will extend full cooperation in this task, the letter added.
