Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that Major Dhyanchand, master of hockey, deserves to be first claimant for Bharat Ratna award. The player like him is rarely born in the country.

Chief Minister Mr. Chouhan was on Tuesday addressing a function held to celebrate Platinum Jubilee of gold medal win of Indian Hockey team victory in Berlin Olympics on August 15, 1936 exactly 75 years ago under the leadership of hockey wizard Major Dhyanchand.

The senior players who took part in Olympics between 1964 and 2000 were felicitated at the function organised at Bhopal nursery of hockey. State Sports, Tourism and Youth Welfare Minister Tukojirao Puar and well-known actor Raza Murad were also present.

The Chief Minister further said that he is feeling proud of felicitating these senior hockey players. Major Dhyanchand master of hockey never lost any match. He always stood for victory. He said three consecutive gold medal haul in Olympics was the rarest feat achieved by Major Dhyanchand. The Central Government had honoured him with Padam Bhushan in 1956. For the first time a postal-stamp was issued in the name of a player who was Major Dhyanchand.

Mr. Chouhan said that master blaster cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is also a highly talented player but Dhyanchand should be given the Bharat Ratna first. He said Tendulkar should not allow himself to be auctioned in the IPL if he is under consideration for Bharat Ratna.

He lamented that players like Tendulkar are sold and bought, it really hurts. A player plays for the country and not for the companies, he added.

He appealed to the senior players to promote hockey and bring laurel to the country. The state government will provide all possible help in this respect. A hockey academy has been set up to prepare players. Four Astro-turf have been laid for hockey in the state. He said that we dream of achieving gold medal in Olympic. Therefore, all should work together. He announced to rename Bhopal Hockey Academy as Major Dhyanchand stadium. He said that senior players would be felicitated and given Rs. one lakh each at Chief Minister House.

The Chief Minister felicitated 16 ex-Olympian and International players including Gurbakhsh Singh, Mukhben Singh, Inam-ur-Rehman, Charles Corneous, Ajit Singh, Ashok Dhyanchand, Virendra Singh, Ashok Diwan, Syed Ali, Harcharan Singh, Meer Ranjan Negi, Syed Jalaluddin Rizvi, Sujit Kumar, Sameer Dad, Mohammed Yusuf, Salim Abbasi, Khursheed Ali, Altaf-ur-Rehman, Abdul Ghafoor Khan, Devendra Singh, Sanjay Bisht, Subhodh Khandekar, Jamshed Khan, Deepak James, Hasarat Qureshi, Ishrat Ali and M.P. Singh.

The senior hockey players submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister Mr. Chouhan urging him to send a proposal of recommendations to Central Government for awarding Bharat Ratna posthumously to Major Dhayanchand. Director Sports and Youth Welfare Sanjay Choudhary and hockey players were present on this occasion.
