Workshop on "Energy Conservation" held in AMU

Aligarh: Inaugurating a workshop on "Energy Conservation", the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis said that the University has submitted a proposal to the Union Minister of New and Renewal Energy for setting up of an Indo-US Energy Centre in the University and Dr. Farooq Abdullah has promised to clear the project.

He said that the increasing electricity consumption is a serious matter and urged the University community to adopt possible corrective measures including use of modern edge technology. Prof. Azis said that the University has sanctioned Rs. 4.5 Crores for outdated wiring replacement in the campus.

Prof. Azis said that the University has invited two energy experts, Mr. Sandeep Garg of Ministry of Power and Dr. Masood Akhtar, President, Cleantech Partners Inc., Wisconsin, USA. Both the energy experts are the product of this great institution. He said that hundreds of old boys of this University have touched his heart during the last four years.

Earlier, Prof. Anwaruddin Anwar, Member-in-Charge, Electricity Department of University said that the AMU is a big consumer of UPPCL with sanctioned load of 6.1 MVA and the power is received through two 33 KV lines.

Prof. Anwar highlighted the energy consumption breakup of the University and said that 66% energy was used in the Departments of studies, offices, tubewells, street lights while 22% consumption is recorded in the halls of residence. Only 12% energy was used in mobile towers and staff quarters.

Prof. Anwar suggested the power saving initiatives such as implanting solar geysers in all halls of residence, solar street lights and promotion of use of CFL in the campus. He also suggested that use of energy efficient air conditioners and fans be increased.

Dr. Masood Akhtar, President, Cleantech Partners, Inc., Focus on Energy, Wisconsin, USA said that energy cooperation is a central element of the US-India Strategic Partnership. During President Obama?s visit to India in November 2010, the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Government of India signed an agreement to establish a Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Centre designed to promote clean energy innovation by teams of scientists and engineers from India and the US in the field of energy efficiency of buildings, second-generation bio-fuels and solar energy.

Dr. Sandeep Garg, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India said that Indian per capita energy consumption is 530 kgoe while the world average is 1770.
He said that in India energy demand is increasing due to rising income, accelerated industrialization, urbanization and population growth. He urged to educate consumers for making energy efficient purchases.

Mr. Mohd. Rihan conducted the programme and Mr. Javed Mohsin, Electricity Engineer proposed a vote of thanks.
