Islamphobia has no effect on conversion to Islam in UK: Faith Matters

By Abdul Rashid Agwan

The study conducted by M.A Kevin Brice, Swansea University, on behalf of a local think tank on the issues related to conversion to Islam in the United Kingdom have revealed that the increasing trend of Islamphobia and such terrorist events as 9/11 in the US and 7/7 in UK have no depressing effect on Islam’s attraction to non-Muslims in UK and other parts of Europe.

Although media has highlighted that number of converts to Islam in United Kingdom has doubled, however, it is more due to revision of figures caused by a better and comprehensive study under taken by Faith Matters, a Muslim outfit engaged in the issues of conversion in the region, than any actual acceleration of the trend. Moreover, the research has not come out with some definitive figure but certain still there are certain projections derived on the basis of a scientific investigation.

It seems that the captions chosen in most of the news stories on the study intend to add into Islamphobia rather than in understanding a social phenomenon and thus distract the every purpose of the undertaken research to explore the significance of new converts’ to ‘bridge’ between communities.

Previous estimates have put the number of Muslim converts in the Kingdom at between 14,000 and 25,000, but the study suggests that the real figure could be as high as 100,000, with as many as 5,000 new conversions each year.

As the said think makes clear, this study was aimed “to assess the roles that converts to Islam have within our communities and it shows that there are numerous positive and highly productive roles that they play. There has also been no definitive study on the number of converts and whilst the assessments in this report are projections, we attempt to look at this area using statistical data that is available and through interviews conducted for this research”.

The study holds that among the converts 55% hails from the White British, 16% Other Whites and 29% to Non-White categories. There are 62% women among the converts and the average age of all converts at the 27.5 years. The high ratio of women among the converts to Islam, as shown by the study, makes it evident why the political establishment and rights groups in western countries are more inclined to ban head-scarf in public domain.

Interestingly, the survey has broken the stereotype that conversions to Islam has been basically a marriage-driven thing and most of the respondents feel that they could be good bridge between Muslims and non-Muslims.
